Maria’s Gelato & Cafe

Just off of Highway 1 if you drive north towards the Fraser River you’ll come across a village called Fort Langley. It’s where the Hudson’s Bay Company set up shop in 1827, selling salmon and cedar to the Hawaiian Islands. Today the village is also a regular filming location. Currently it’s home to Archie & friends as “Riverdale”.

The tiny walkable village of 3,400 people has more than a few vegan options which might come as a surprise. But one of the ones that cannot be missed is Maria’s Gelato & Cafe. Specifically the gelato. It is PHENOMENAL. You can taste the fresh ingredients, and it’s somehow more fulfilling than ice cream.

Sometimes when traffic has been bad on my commute home in the summer I’ll take a detour off the highway and stop for some limoncello or raspberry.

If you are planning a trip from other parts of the lower mainland try to make it on a Saturday morning. Not only will you get to try their gelato, it’s also when they turn the pastry case into a full-scale vegan doughnut operation. It’s also when they have their vegan almond croissants. And if you are an almond croissant lover, it’s reason enough to make the trip.

I’m hoping this spring to get over to Veggie Bob’s and finally visit the farmers market. If you’ve got any other places I should try leave me a note below!
